FOR US CONSUMERS
There are certain symptoms of COPD that you should look out for:
SHORTNESS OF BREATH, especially while doing activities
A feeling of TIGHTNESS IN THE CHEST
WHEEZING—a high-pitched whistling sound made while breathing
CONSTANT COUGHING or a cough that produces a large amount of mucus—also called smoker's cough
These symptoms can sometimes appear years before the flow of air into and out of the lungs declines. However, not everyone with these symptoms has COPD, and not everyone who has COPD has these symptoms. If you experience any of these symptoms—even if they’re mild—be sure to talk to your doctor.
It isn’t always easy to tell at first—maybe you find yourself making small adjustments to help ease your breathing difficulties while doing daily activities. These symptoms may not feel like a big deal now, but over time, even everyday tasks—like cooking, climbing stairs, or carrying a suitcase—can start to require more effort. That’s why talking to your doctor early is a good idea. Together you can determine what’s causing your symptoms and how to manage them.
